Car thefts alarmingly surge 191% in NYC since 2019, NYPD data shows

Car thefts in the Big Apple have surged a staggering 191% compared to before the COVID pandemic, according to NYPD data released Wednesday — as Mayor Eric Adams declared that “crime is down” and New York City had turned a corner.

A total of 15,802 vehicles were ripped off across the five boroughs through Dec. 31, an alarming uptick from the 5,438 stolen back in 2019, according to the year-end review of crime statistics.

Ten teens were charged on Monday in a string of carjackings in Washington, D.C., authorities said, amid what law enforcement calls a sharp rise in the crime in the nation’s capital.

The 10 suspects are believed to be involved in two separate carjacking rings in D.C., authorities said: The teens, who are being charged as adults, are allegedly responsible for at least 15 vehicle thefts and held victims at gunpoint, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Matthew Graves, said at a news conference.

A 4-year-old boy was fatally shot in front of his parents in what Southern California authorities described as an “unimaginable” road rage incident involving two suspects who allegedly chased down the victim’s family and unleashed a barrage of gunfire on their vehicle.

The fatal shooting occurred Friday night in Los Angeles County after the assailants allegedly cut off the family’s car on a highway in Lancaster, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Two men were found fatally shot in a luxury car parked on a Bronx street early Thursday in what appears to be a double execution, officials said.

Cops responding to a 911 call about a large, rowdy group Sedgwick Ave. just off the Major Deegan Expressway near Depot Place in Highbridge about 1 a.m. made a grim discovery: two men found dead inside a 2017 Mercedes Benz.

Both men were shot in the head, with at least one shot in the back of the head, a source with knowledge of the case said.

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police and community leaders are struggling for solutions after back-to-back weekends in which young children were shot and killed.

“We are tapping all of our resources to ensure these killers cannot kill anyone else,” Supt. David Brown said. “We all need to be outraged by this violence.”

According to Chicago police, 63 people were shot, 16 fatally between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Three of those fatal shootings victims were minors, police said.

CHICAGO (CBS) — With three more fatalites reported late Sunday and very early Monday, at least 17 people were killed in shootings in Chicago this weekend, including a 1-year-old boy who was hit by bullet while riding in a car in Englewood, and a 10-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet in her home in Logan Square.

Chicago Police Chief of Operations Fred Waller said shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, the mother of the 20-month-old boy was driving south on Halsted Street near 60th Street, on the way home from the laundromat, with the toddler in a child seat in the back of the car. Another car pulled up alongside them, and someone inside started shooting.
